Historical revisionism: War against Russia and Zionist genocide

by KLAUS HARTMANN, President of the World Union of Freethinkers

We have been dealing with the topic of historical revisionism for quite some time.

In March 2024, at the conference in Belgrade, I said, among other things:
“Geostrategic planning games dating back to the pre-World War I era and continuing until Hitler’s time were based on the premise: ‘Whoever has Ukraine can force Russia’ and ‘Russia cannot be a European power without Ukraine.’ After World War II, US policy was aimed at undermining cooperation between Russia and Western Europe.”1

And a year earlier at our conference in Frankfurt am Main:
“The end of World War II is often declared a ‘turning point for the whole world,’ with some seeing it as liberation, others as defeat. In this year, 2023, the voices of those who, while not publicly lamenting the liberation from fascism as such, particularly resent the Soviet Union for its act of liberation have become especially audible.”

In many cities, especially in the German capital Berlin, anti-fascist symbols such as the St. George ribbon were banned, as were the Soviet flag and the Victory Flag, the flag of the Russian Federation – but of course not the Ukrainian flag. Flags of the wartime ally are naturally held aloft; according to rbb24, young people with Russian flags at the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin-Treptow were chased and killed by police.2

In 2025, on the 80th anniversary of the liberation, playing and singing the song “The Holy War” was explicitly forbidden in Treptower Park – a song that only Hitler supporters could possibly find objectionable. It gives the impression that the Soviet Union is not thanked for the liberation, but quite the opposite, that it is resented. In Hanover, participants in the commemoration were removed from the square by the police because they displayed the historical photograph of the Soviet soldier raising the hammer and sickle flag on the Reichstag in Berlin in 1945.

At commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation, representatives of the Russian Federation and Belarus were “undesirable” by the German Federal Government and, as suggested by an order from the Foreign Ministry declared as a “guideline”, could be removed if necessary by exercising “house rules”.3

We pointed to the scandalous historical revisionist incidents in Ukraine, which, according to the political figures in Brussels and Berlin, are defending “our democracy” and “our European values”: the demolition of monuments to the liberators from fascism, the declaring of Nazi collaborators as national heroes. And Scholz, the self-proclaimed “turning point” politician, and von der Leyen, the EU’s corrupt president, break into the Ukrainian fascist salute at the end of their speeches: “Hail Ukraine!”

Imperialism, as it materializes around NATO, is fighting against the loss of its hegemony. To combat this loss of hegemony, US imperialism is primarily focused on the struggle against China, on increasing aggression – from Obama through Biden to Trump.

Should the Nuremberg verdicts be overturned?

Western politicians are not suffering from forgetfulness; they want to rewrite history, as demonstrated by the 2019 EU Parliament resolution, which attempted to assign blame for World War II not only to Nazi Germany but also to the Soviet Union. This effectively means overturning and revising the verdict of the Nuremberg Trials against the major war criminals. It means equating perpetrators and victims.

The EU and Great Britain know that their dominance in Europe requires a weak Russia, and for their own global power ambitions, ideally a semi-colonial Russia as a hinterland and source of raw materials. Germany, France, Poland, and Great Britain, in particular, are therefore counting on the continuation of the war with Russia, indeed, even on its escalation.

A study by RAND, the largest US military think tank, concludes that the once unchallenged military superiority of the US is waning. However, this is not a signal for a peaceful, quiet abdication based on insight; rather, it calls for a “rethinking of defense strategy in order to preserve the US-led international order (dominance).”4

The NATO proxy war against Russia and the military buildup against China, the war hysteria in Berlin, Brussels, and London, accompanied by an unprecedented arms buildup and debt binge, as well as plans to deploy modernized US nuclear weapons and intermediate-range missiles, do not point in the direction of peace.

The criminalization of international solidarity also serves the preparation for war. The EU has therefore even imposed sanctions on its own citizens, Alina Lipp and Thomas Röper, against which they have no legal recourse because they are barred from entering the country and from accessing funds.

German investigative authorities have declared the two self-proclaimed republics in the Donbas, which are subjects of international law as defined in the Minsk II agreement, to be terrorist organizations and, on this basis, have issued arrest warrants against two freethinkers who have been committed to delivering humanitarian aid for years.

No opposition to the war policy is permitted.

The NachDenkSeiten website commented:
The recent arrest warrants and house searches of activists from the humanitarian organization “Friedensbrücke – Kriegsopferhilfe” (Peace Bridge – War Victims Aid) represent the latest escalation in the repression of people who publicly oppose the prevailing opinion on the Ukraine war. The charge of “supporting a terrorist organization” in this context, under Sections 129a and 129b of the German Criminal Code (StGB), marks a new level of erosion in the German justice system’s commitment to international law and democratic principles.

(…) The point is that no media opposition to the war policy is allowed. (…) Politically motivated criminal proceedings are increasingly being conducted on the basis of a specific historical narrative – namely, the one that fits the intended justification for the verdict. (…) In the future, it will therefore be important to defend oneself against such attacks on democratic rights such as freedom of expression and assembly. This requires, including through legal means, defending oneself against the increasing arbitrariness of the German law enforcement authorities.5

Psychological preparation for war

We are witnessing racism in action once again: Citizenship seems to be a stigma – the Russian passport has become a cultural liability.
Anna Netrebko was no longer allowed to perform in Berlin, New York, or Zurich. The star conductor Valery Gergiev was dismissed from the Munich Philharmonic, banned from performing at Carnegie Hall and with the Vienna Philharmonic, stripped of his honorary conductor title at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and following protests, a performance ban was also imposed in Naples in the summer of 2025.

The French philosopher Catherine Clément warned of a “civilizational regression.” She argued that it was dangerous if citizenship once again determined social participation – regardless of individual responsibility.

While Russian athletes are required to make personal statements, Israeli citizens are not required to distance themselves from Netanyahu’s Gaza offensive – even though children are dying there every day.

The early phase of Jewish persecution in Nazi Germany began with the stigmatization and collective ostracism of an entire nation based on ethnicity or nationality. In the early Nazi era, exclusions were based not on any action, but on belonging. The Jewish violinist was not excluded because he played badly, but because he was Jewish. Today, it is not the pianist who plays badly who is disinvited, but the one who carries the wrong passport—or the wrong first name. Being Russian is enough to disqualify someone.

There are lists, entry bans, exclusion criteria, and collective punishment based on origin, and this practice enjoys broad social acceptance. Anyone who criticizes it is considered a “Putin apologist.”

Neglected journalism

“Thousands of new tanks are rolling against Putin,” reported the synchronized Munich Merkur and Frankfurter Rundschau on July 9, 2025.6

“So, the hot Third World War has obviously broken out. Tanks on the move!” speculate the NachDenkSeiten website. They comment: “The headlines give the impression that thousands of tanks are already ‘rolling’ against Russia, or that the German side intends to send tanks against Russia. How must such headlines appear in the eyes of Russia, which suffered millions of deaths in the Second World War?”

The “turning point” has already brought us war loans dubbed “special funds” and the “war readiness” demanded by a Social Democratic minister. While deindustrialization progresses, the only booming sector of the economy is the arms industry. It can thank NATO, which now demands that member states invest 5% of their GDP in rearmament and war.

The so-called “nuclear sharing” within NATO means the storage of US nuclear weapons, including at Büchel Air Base in Germany. This base is currently being converted and adapted for the 35 US F-35 fighter jets ordered by the German Armed Forces. Instead of the original cost of €1.2 billion, the estimated cost has now increased by €800 million.7

The aircraft are designed to transport and drop US nuclear bombs in the event of war, something German Air Force pilots have been training for for years.

“War-ready”

According to Chancellor Merz, Germany aims to become the “leading military power in Europe.” It has been that before. In the past, this country’s rearmament led to world wars. The goal is to achieve full military capability by 2029.

The Green Paper ZMZ 4.0, “Civil-Military Cooperation 4.0 in a Military Crisis,” published on January 30, 2025, by the Future Forum Public Security (ZOES), a “think tank for shaping the future development of public security in Germany,” meticulously describes how the war against Russia is to be escalated in 2030: Starting with the annual “Zapad” maneuvers of Russian and Belarusian troops, NATO troops are to be massively deployed to the Russian borders, alert levels are to be raised, and consultations are to be conducted in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.8

The European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), an EU think tank in Paris, argues that the EU must actively “disempower” Russia by reducing its ability to undermine European interests. The conclusion is clear: Europe is not powerless, but it has not yet translated its diverse strengths into decisive action. To disempower Russia, the EU must think and act in terms of power—and have the courage to use it.9

This orientation builds on the 2019 strategy document by the US think tank Rand Corporation, which set the goal: “Extending Russia – competing from advantageous ground.”10

Playing with atomic fire

Ukraine boasted about its “Operation Spiderweb,” but hardly any media outlet reported on the escalation behind it. The targets were nuclear-capable strategic bombers – part of the Triad, the so-called “balance of terror.”

This likely wouldn’t have been possible without NATO’s help and is playing with fire. If Ukraine acted without the consent of the US or NATO, then it is unpredictable. If it did so with the consent of the US or NATO, then it was a test to see if Russia would retaliate with nuclear weapons. The day before the negotiations in Istanbul sent a clear signal: the war continues, and the threat of nuclear war is being played with.

German Major General Christian Freuding expressed “respect and recognition” for this attack, thereby making it clear that the military, intelligence services, the federal government, and the arms industry are threatening to lead us to ruin. This man is the head of the Special Staff for Ukraine in the German Ministry of Defense, and on May 8, 2025, the 80th anniversary of the liberation from fascism, he posed with Oleg Romanov, a high-ranking commander of the Nazi Azov Regiment. The attack to which this major general expressed “respect and recognition” also included the terrorist attack on civilian railway infrastructure, which left 7 dead and 100 injured—something Freuding explicitly included in his admiration.11

However, for War Minister Pistorius, this was not a reason for dismissal, but on the contrary, for promotion: He appointed Major General Freuding as the new Inspector of the Army.12

Intent to destroy

The Financial Times reports on an interview with Boris Pistorius: “He emphasized that German troops, who for years had cultivated a culture of military restraint in response to the horrors of the Second World War, would be prepared to kill Russian soldiers in the event of an attack by Moscow on a NATO member state.”

Markus Klöckner of the NachDenkSeiten website commented: “It is now becoming increasingly clear how Germany’s government is leading the country further and deeper into the abyss. Germany’s Russia policy has mutated into a monster – and the monster is growing bigger.”13

The Russian historians Trenin, Karaganov and Avakyants write in their article “From passive to active deterrence”:

“The transition from a failed partnership to a new confrontation and then to open confrontation precludes a return to the original format of the ‘Cold War’.” “Europe’s ruling circles are already engaged in political, moral, and military-economic preparations for a major war with Russia.”14

Dmitri Trenin wrote on July 19, 2025: Many people today say that humanity is heading towards a “Third World War,” meaning that something similar to the 20th century is imminent. However, war is constantly changing its appearance. In reality, the world war is already here, even if not everyone has grasped it. The pre-war period ended for Russia in 2014, for China in 2017, and for Iran in 2023. Since then, the spread and intensity of modern warfare have been increasing. Despite its changing appearance, the cause of this world war is traditional: the shifting balance of power in the world. The West senses that the rise of new power centers (especially China) and the resurgence of Russia as a great power threaten its hegemony and has launched a counter-offensive.
For the US and Europe, this is not the final battle, but it is definitely a determined one. The West is incapable of coming to terms with the loss of global hegemony. This is not merely a matter of geopolitics. Western ideology (politically and economically, it is globalism; socio-culturally, posthumanism) inherently rejects diversity, national or civilizational identity, and tradition. The end of universalism represents a catastrophe for the modern West—it is unwilling to settle for mere regional status. Therefore, it is attempting to pool its considerable resources and leverage its shattered, but still existing, technological superiority to destroy those it has declared its rivals.

To speak of intent to destroy is no exaggeration…“15

The Russian Federation’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, commented: “Today, Europe has effectively descended into a frenzy of Russophobia, and its militarization is proceeding virtually unchecked. There is ample evidence of this. Just consider how the President of the European Commission announced plans to raise an alleged 800 billion euros for defense purposes. Recently, the German Chancellor has been particularly conspicuous with his pronouncements: He is calling for Germany to rearm, is raising the possibility of universal conscription, and is demanding—apparently as before the First and Second World Wars—the creation of the strongest regular army in Europe. The Federal Minister of Defense is no less egregious, having dared to declare his willingness to kill Russian soldiers. Inevitably, historical parallels emerge: Today’s Germany—and indeed all of Europe under its current leadership—is degenerating into a kind of ‘Fourth Reich’.”16

EU dictates

The brutal imposition of the exclusive NATO propaganda narrative is not only directed against citizens, media outlets, and organizations that present a different view of events. Von der Leyen and her EU corruption are also massively interfering in the sovereignty of other states and undermining citizens’ right to vote.

When the “wrong” candidate, meaning one not inclined towards the EU, was leading in the Romanian presidential election, the EU, through its loyal government, and the government in turn through its own courts, had the election annulled. 23

In the repeat election, the most promising candidate was barred from running again. Following the familiar motto, “Stop thief!”, the EU then also accused Russia of “election interference.”24

In the runoff election for the presidency in Moldova, the “pro-Western head of state” and von der Leyen’s friend Maia Sandu won – “thanks to votes from abroad.” The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, stated on X that Sandu had championed “democracy, the rule of law, and a European future” and had “demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership.” Europe will continue to support Moldova on this path.25

This was meant as a threat, as Moldova was scheduled to hold parliamentary elections in September 2025. The NZZ reported on August 5, 2025: “Moldova is preparing for Russian interference ahead of the parliamentary elections. The pro-Russian governor of Gagauzia must go to prison.”

In Gagauzia, an autonomous region in Moldova with its own language, government, and university, the head of government, Evghenia Gutul, was arrested on Sandu’s orders and sentenced to seven years in prison for alleged Russian campaign financing.26

We declare our solidarity with Evghenia Gutsul and demand her immediate release!

Solidarity against Zionist genocide!

The phrases used by German militarists regarding Ukraine and international law become a complete farce in light of their official stance towards Israel. According to Chancellor Merz, Israel is currently doing “dirty work” for “us,” and for which “we” supply weapons.27

In Gaza, the Zionist terrorist army bombed all 36 main hospitals, completely destroying most of them. Hundreds of surviving doctors and medical staff were forcibly deported to unmarked camps and have since disappeared without a trace. Over 1,500 medical professionals were murdered. These are clearly targeted killings intended to destroy the healthcare system in Gaza as part of a genocide. Rainer Rupp: “For Zionist racists, Palestinians are inferior beings to whom Israeli legal norms do not apply.”

They are only allowing a fraction of the vital food and medicine into Gaza. Rainer Rupp sees this as the stated goal “to break the remaining people there through hunger and disease so that they can no longer resist forced displacement. Israel is using hunger and disease as weapons to violently reduce Gaza’s population.” Gaza’s medical infrastructure is on the verge of collapse, while the Zionist terrorists continue unpunished and unhindered. These crimes are generally carefully ignored by the pro-Zionist Western “quality media” and politicians.

British doctor Nick Maynard reports on the artificially created famine in the Gaza Strip. His baby formula was confiscated when he crossed the border into Gaza. As a result, numerous children are dying in the blockaded territory. In an interview with Yalda Hakim on the program “The World,” he recounted meeting several doctors who had boxes of baby formula in their luggage, all of which were confiscated by Israeli border guards. “Nothing else was confiscated, just the baby formula,” Maynard emphasized. The doctors themselves are also starving. Two colleagues he had known for years have lost 20 and 30 kilograms respectively. They now look like mere shells of their former selves.

On July 25, 2025, the aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) criticized the program, stating: “The deliberate use of hunger as a weapon by the Israeli authorities in Gaza has reached an unprecedented level.” According to the UN, since the Gaza Food Fund (GHF) took over the distribution of aid, more than 1,000 people have been killed trying to obtain food assistance. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Relief Agency for Gaza (NRWA), the Gaza Foundation’s aid arm, has also sharply criticized the program. Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini said: “The so-called GHF distribution program is a sadistic death trap. Snipers open fire indiscriminately on crowds as if they have a license to kill.” He added that “Israeli forces and private US security personnel at the GHF distribution points have deliberately perpetrated violence against starving Palestinians,” calling them “sites of orchestrated killings and dehumanization.”28

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is waging “the fight against evil” for Europe and the USA as well. Karin Leukefeld writes: “Those who do not submit to the Israeli bombing campaigns are annihilated and driven out. Israel’s patrons in Washington, London, Paris, Berlin, and Brussels provide weapons, money, and media and political protection. Another means of warfare is the elimination of political opponents through legal means, also known as ‘lawfare.’ With media support, aggressive campaigns are launched against the ‘targets,’ which can create a veritable pogrom atmosphere.”29

One prominent victim is Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Palestinians. She was banned from speaking at universities in Munich and Berlin in early 2025, and now US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has imposed sanctions against her. He stated that she is “biased,” “malicious,” and “unfit for the office of Special Rapporteur,” that she spreads “blatant anti-Semitism,” supports terrorism, and displays “open contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West.”

Francesca Albanese’s reaction: “No comment on mafia-style intimidation techniques. I am busy reminding (UN) member states of their obligation to stop and punish genocide, and those who profit from it.”

In her reports, she documents war crimes in Gaza and the West Bank, as in the report “Genocide as Colonial Annihilation”30 or “The Transformation of the Israeli Occupation Economy into an Economy of Genocide”.31

Gideon Levy, the long-time Haaretz correspondent in the occupied Palestinian territories, argues that the Israeli government’s plans to build a so-called “humanitarian city” on the ruins of the southern Palestinian city of Rafah, from where Palestinians are to be deported, amount to a “concentration camp.” “There is no other way to describe (these plans) than that a concentration camp is to be built there.”32 It is “really hard to imagine that this is happening 80 years after the Holocaust.” Defense Minister Katz, who “devised this crazy and diabolical idea,” is himself a descendant of Holocaust survivors, according to Levy. Most Israelis have lost all humanity toward Gaza. Concentration camps in Gaza?! Apparently not a problem in Germany. Here, they are celebrating the German-Israeli anniversary year. Sixty years of Israeli-German diplomatic relations, shared values, and the “strategic partnership” with Israel, which is “surpassed only by the USA.”33 This ties in with the news report “Despite the famine in Gaza, Germany is holding back on EU-Israel sanctions.”34

Journalist Jakob Reimann lost his case against Zionist influencer Karoline Preisler (FDP) before the Berlin Regional Court and must delete his post on X: “Karoline Preisler (…) also has something to say about the mass rapes of Palestinian prisoners by soldiers: ‘even there, (sic) #Israel is still the more humane actor.’ This is the radicalization of the center.” Journalist Jakob Reimann calls the verdict an “attack on press freedom.” “While pro-Israel actors can express extremely racist views in the media or call for the commission of war crimes, voices that condemn this violence are to be suppressed.”35

Complicity with the perpetrators of genocide, in turn, leads to a massive curtailment of freedom of expression, association, and assembly:

Ban on pro-Palestinian organizations such as Samidoun
Ban on banners and slogans such as “From the River to the Sea”,
Entry and performance bans, such as those imposed on the Jewish psychoanalyst Iris Hefets, and existential sanctions, such as those against Hüseyin Doğru.
The administration of the University of Bremen prohibited a Jewish psychoanalyst from giving a lecture on the topic of silence and guilt – psychological mechanisms in dealing with the genocide in Gaza. She is originally from Israel and has lived in Berlin for several years. The university’s rector, Jutta Günther, justified the decision by stating that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Germany’s domestic intelligence agency) had classified the organization “Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East,” of which Iris Hefets is the second chairwoman, as “confirmed extremist.”

Uli Gellermann concludes that in Germany, people want to “cover their backs to the Israeli murderers”.

The clear lesson from German history was: ‘Never again genocide!’ But Germany is complicit in precisely this genocide through its inaction, its staying out of the Gaza situation. Chancellor Merz’s SA grandfather, if he could rub his hands together in the cemetery, would be gloating: Instead of rushing to the aid of the victims of the Israeli genocide, the German Chancellor is effectively covering his back for the Israeli murderers. The Germans were genocide experts and today refuse to draw the correct historical lesson and give the Palestinians a chance to survive.

Heeding the lessons of history would mean “advocating at the United Nations for a peace enforcement operation under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. Only in this way can lives in Gaza be saved.”36
